Abstract
The Fourth gospel, like the Synoptics, is part of the primitive Christian kerygma, for it is meant to be a proclamation that Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of God. John states his purpose for writing his gospel quite clearly in these terms: "But these things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name."
