Abstract
Battered wives are frequently subjected to serious physical injury as a result of beatings by their spouses. The purpose of this essay was to explore the literature to aid in the identification and treatment of battered wives. Wife beating has been a significant problem throughout history due to its being dealt with privately. There are many psycho-social factors influencing the occurrence of battered wives including societal acceptance of violence, commonly accepted myths rationalizing why wives accept the violence, factors explaining why battered wives stay in abusive relationships, and causes of the violence.
