Abstract
Most children were initially identified as deviant, maladjusted, or exhibiting behavior problems by significant others in their lives: parents, teachers, peers, and so forth. These perceptions may have later been confirmed by 11experts., 11 but it was generally parental concern which provided the motivation for evaluation and treatment that usually took place in child-guidance settings. Therefore, it was deemed imperative by researchers who investigated parent-child relationships that accurate assessments of parental perceptions were made so that proper interventions could be specified and preventive measures implemented in the future. Parents typically had more information about their children's behavior than anyone else; however, their judgments of their children's adjustment often were not as valid and reliable as possible.
