Abstract
In 19th century Europe political achievements were many and varied. Among these the redemption or Italy possessed a particular charm. Since the fall or the Roman Empire, Italy consisted of separate states. Nevertheless, every patriotic Italian heart aspired towards national unity. During the Middle Ages little republics won their independence by overthrowing their feudal lords. After a while they quarreled among themselves and again became prey to strong families.
