Abstract

Many children will spend their school years friendless and experience few positive interactions with their peers. This fact has resulted in a proliferation of research attempting to understand the withdrawn, aggressive, and isolated child. The major impetus of this research is the recognition of numerous problems that may result from peer isolation. Children who have experienced limited social interaction have less opportunity for social learning (Oden+ Asher, 1977). These children are more likely to be identified as juvenile delinquents (Roffs, Sells, + Golden, 1972), to drop out of school and experience other mental health problems (Cowen, Pederson, Babigian, Izzo, + Trost, 1973). Clearly, there are long-range effects if social skills remain unimproved.
