Abstract
The year 1862 was one of uncertainty in the United States. A year before, ten states had seceded, throwing the nation into turmoil. A civil war had begun, but in 1862 the hard fighting was yet to come. The seceding Southerners had the "privilege" of being on the defensive while the Northerners would have to assert the indivisibility of the union by staging an offensive campaign. The pressure was on the north to initiate action.
