Abstract
The best method of teaching reading has long been a source of controversy among educators. Various methods have been used in this country, more or less successfully, since the birth of the nation. In the mid 1800s children were taught to read through the use of an alphabetic method, in which each letter sound was learn d and then used to identify words. Gradually, with the influence of Horace Mann and John Russell Webb, emphasis shifted from isolated sounds to Whole words. Later, in the 1950's, emphasis once again shifted with the influence of such books as Rudolph Flesch's Why Johnny Can't Read (1955) and Terman and Walcutt's Reading, Chaos and Cure (1958). Their major contribution was to bring phonics back into the classroom.
