Abstract
Although The Red Badge of Courage has been the most frequently studied work of Stephen Crane and has been the subject of a constantly increasing critical audience within the past two decades, surprisingly little attention has been given to the patterns of myth which permeate the novel. To date the most important study of myth in the novel remains John E. Hart's II The Red Badge of Courage as Myth and Symbol," published in 1953. For taking an approach to the novel that criticism had avoided for so many years Hart undoubtedly deserves some measure of the recognition that his article has received.
