Abstract
The design of slender columns in multi-story buildings is studied. The design methodology using ACI 318-77 and ACI-83 for the design of slender columns is compared. This report describes the design procedure for slender columns which approximates the slenderness effect using the moment magnifier concept. The moments computed by an ordinary frame analysis are multiplied by a "moment magnifier'' which is a function of the factored axial load Pu and the critical buckling load Pc for the column. The column is then designed for this magnified moment. A comparison of the two design procedures shows that the ACI 318-(8J) procedure is more consistent and takes each case (braced, unbraced) separately which leads to more economical column design for unbraced frames than the ACI 318-(77) procedure.
