Abstract
The publication of H. J. c. Grierson's Metaphysical Lyrics and Poems of the Seventeenth Century and T. s. Eliot's review of that book in 1921 revivified a critical interest in the hitherto almost neglected poetry of the "metaphysical" school. John Donne's poetry has come to be admired for its intellectual ingenuity and precision. The poetry of George Herbert has received critical acclaim for its religious sentiment and theological explorations. But the criticism of Andrew Marvell's poetry has remained on the surface in an examination of its rich descriptions of nature. And this critical preoccupation with the nature imagery of his poetry has been at the expense of the neglect of the paradoxical wit which resides behind the imagery. A more intensive examination of Marvell's poetry will justly acclaim his as one of the r1chest poetic voices of the Renaissance.
