Abstract

At some point, sooner or later, the question will arise: Why Congar as the choice for this paper? Let me first say that I am fascinated by the movement of Catholic Theology in the pre-conciliar, conciliar and post-conciliar ages associated with the Second Vatican Council. In Congar we have a man who reflects in his lifetime much of the experience of the Church through these difficult times. It is a matter of history that the papacies of Pius XII and John XXIII on one end mark the closing of an age and on the other the opening of a new age. It is also commonly accepted that the ushering out and entering in of these ages were reflected in the painful and glorious, ins pi ring experiences of a great many people. Con gar's own agony in the pre-conciliar age and his consequent jubilation with the dawning of the Council join to make him a most interesting subject. In a few paragraphs both his own experiences, undoubtedly shared by many, and his somewhat unique formula of survival will be illustrated.
