Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the history and nature of the theodicy question and to look at three possible reactions to natural theology in view of the dichotomy that developed between reason and revelation in western Christianity. The first is the traditional Catholic apologetical emphasis on the proofs of the existence of God. A second reaction could be exemplified by Barth's total rejection of natural theology. And finally, we will look at Moltmann's critique of the traditional views on natural theology and examine his reinterpretation of the theodicy question in the light of his understanding of a theology of hope.
