Abstract

Handwriting receives its thrust in the primary grades because it serves as a foundation for the encoding processes of all other academic areas. The basic process of communicating ideas is the functional purpose of handwriting. However, the style and form are also important. The bulk of stress is given to teaching the young child the handwriting skill, but then not enough attention to maintenance and improvement is given to handwriting in the intermediate grades. A style of handwriting emerges; it is not born.
