Abstract

An increasing amount of attention given to co-curricular areas in recent educational literature points to the fact that the position of the extracurricular activity in the school schedule is no longer ignored or merely tolerated. Since the publication of the Cardinal Principles of Secondary Education, practically every general publication addressed to the problems of the high school has stressed the unique opportunity of the school in organizing and directing social and developmental activities of young people. In particular they refer to the development of self- realization, use of leisure time, ethical and moral living, civic responsibility, and processes involved in human cooperation.
