Abstract
We know that there is a lot of competition for the attention of children. We know that children do not read that often on their own time. It is also true that too many children cannot read. To ensure that all children read more, this project was undertaken. The main reasons why children should read are for enjoyment and to gain experiences about life. Black at-risk children need to be influenced to read. Books that have black characters can possibly be the motivating factor they need, the impetus to finish one book and then another and another. If the children see familiar topics, situations, and cultural events, they may not be frightened off.
