Abstract
According to popular literature, the dysfunctional family is the "cause" of many of society's problems. The dysfunctional family has been operationalized as those who have experienced parental separation through divorce or death, parental alcoholism, physical abuse, sexual abuse, foster care placement, or adoption. Several researchers have discovered that adult children raised in dysfunctional families (ACODs) harbor emotional and behavioral scars that interfere with their ability to function at an optimal level in society. For example, they often experience difficulty in maintaining healthy relationships, in learning to express feelings, in problem solving skills, in decision-making skills, in trusting others, and in being honest. According to Wanda Webb, AC ODs may become depressed and impulsive and experience periods of anxiety and feelings of abandonment. "They exhibit low self-esteem, mood disorders, identity confusion, [and] low tolerance for frustration".
