Abstract

Topology originated in what are now called mathematical recreations. It seemed little more than a heterogeneous collection of some amusing puzzles. Historically, the first puzzle was that of the Konigsberg bridges. It seems there were two islands in the river Pregel which twisted through the German city of Konigsberg. The two islands were linked by a bridge. In addition, one of the islands was joined to each bank of the Pregel by two bridges, while the other island was joined to each bank by one bridge. The question arose, "How can one stroll across all seven bridges without crossing any one of them twice?"
