Abstract
The amount of freeway construction in terms of safety improvements, maintenance, and geometric design changes has increased greatly throughout the nation within the past several years. Experience that has been gained since the early days of multi-lane highway construction has demonstrated and dictated changes that are necessary to improve freeway safety and efficiency. These necessary changes which are happening now can be expected to continue to happen and also increase in the future. Because of the necessary construction work on an already congested freeway system, engineers and planners have been faced with a challenging problem of traffic control and routing to accommodate safety during construction activities and efficiency in the movement of traffic.
