Abstract
Alfred Dreyfus was born in the Alsatian town of Mulhouse on October 9, 1859, of Jewish parents. On October 15, 1894, Dreyfus, an artillery captain attached to the French General Staff in Paris, was arrested on the charge of having betrayed his country by selling military secrets to the Germans. The preceding September 26th, a bordereau, a letter containing a description of new artillery weapons and of a field manual, had been taken from the office of the German military attache in Paris, Colonel Maximilian von Schwarzkoppen, and sent to the Statistical Section of the French War Office. After an examination of his handwriting seemed to indicate similarities with that of the bordereau, Dreyfus was convicted of having authored it. On January 5, 1895, he was demoted, and during the following month he was sent to penal servitude on Devil's Island off the coast of Guiana.
