Abstract

With the publication in 1762 of his two volume work, Elements of Criticism, Lord Karnes showed himself to be the unchallenged leader in the field of psychological criticism. Several of his theories became standard poles of measurement for critics who were to succeed him. Karnes, in the Elements, attempts a precise methodology, following a Newtonian induction in the manner of Edmund Burke. He follows a precise terminology without variant meanings. What sets him apart from other critics of this transitional period of the later Eighteenth century is his attempt to survey the whole ground of criticism, to isolate criticism as a science and to "improve criticism as one would try to improve agriculture."
