Abstract
As the Director of St. John's School for the Deaf, which is a residential and day school for the hearing impaired, it is difficult for me to investigate the subject of mainstreaming in an unbiased manner. For one thing, our school receives applications every year for children who have come from mainstreamed settings and are appealing to us to remedy the educational setbacks they have suffered. In one case the child's parent is a travelling teacher of the deaf in the mainstream program of her city. That very program is glowingly praised in the literature and so I am inclined to be suspicious of the care taken in gathering information about mainstreaming.
