Abstract

Two influential masterpieces or biblical literature which are very disparate at first sight, Job and the letter to the Romans, are yet contained in our one Bible. This fact has led me to wonder what the relationship between the two is with respect to the crucial theological issues they both deal with: Do they contradict, agree, or is there a development? Who is God, and what does he require, in each? What is the role or religion and morality? What is the locus of the encounter with God? What are its nature and effects? As a method of approaching these and related specific questions, this paper will be a reflective effort comparing the views of faith and revelation found in the book of Job and Paul's letter to the Romans, as both works are primarily occupied with these twin issues. This paper will not be an exegesis of texts, nor will it be a tradition-history. While Paul knew Job, and alludes to it in a few places in Romans (quoting directly just once), there is no attempt here to prove that the letter is dependent on Job for ideas or themes.
