Abstract

Paul Ricoeur has spent his lifetime trying to overcome that suspicion rooted in western civilization and brought into western thought by Nietzsche, Freud and Marx. He has spent a lifetime trying to show us how to recover the naivete we must have had prior to the "hermeneutics of suspicion'' -- especially as it has been defined and redefined by these men. Working to increase awareness of the forgetfulness of being and of the sacred into which we have settled as a result of the suspicion and doubt cast upon symbol and myth, Ricoeur seeks a restoration, a recovery of that immediate response to symbol and myth as disclosing being and the being of the sacred which must have been before the arrival of that suspicion before which we cannot now authentically be; he seeks a restoration of the individual's reception of reality through symbol.
