Abstract
In his introduction to Nature, Ralph Waldo Emerson poses an intriguing question: "Why should not we also enjoy an original relation to the Universe." The question is rhetorical for Emerson presupposes the possibility of such a relationship and suggests the means of attaining it. "Let us interrogate the great apparition that shines peacefully around us. Let us inquire to what end is Nature?" As Emerson develops his thesis which departs from the latter query, two factors emerge in his essay.
