Abstract
The study of economic development as a concentrated area of economics has been relatively recent. Consequently, literature in the field is often scanty in comparison to other areas. Since economic development makes utmost use of history and, especially, analytical tools, contemporary writers, scholars, and those in research can draw from an abundance of current raw materials to attempt conclusions and solutions to problems. Additionally, historical analysis has left an abundance of material from which to draw.
This essay, written in fulfillment of the requirement for a Master of Arts degree from Marquette University, attempts to survey the current thought on only one key factor of economic development--natural resources. The transition of thought as to the importance of this element in economic growth has vastly changed over the past fifty years. Presently, technology has been given the laud that was once bestowed upon natural resources in the evaluation of factors of economic development. It is the author's opinion that these "elements of the earth" still provide the foundation upon which a society progresses. This can not be denied. It is the hope of the writer to put both of these factors--natural resources and technology--into their proper perspectives and to redeem a position of importance for natural resources. In light of this study as an essay the author has taken the opportunity to include personal ideas on various phases of economic development and assumes all responsibility thereof.
