Abstract
The pyrogenic decomposition of hydrocarbons has been a field open for research for many years* The rubber-like compounds which result from the polymerization of pyrogenic decomposition products has directed attention both from the scientific and from the practical standpoint toward a solution of the rubber problem. Various hydrocarbons have been used as starting materials, including saturated and unsaturated compounds of both a cyclic and a straight chain nature. In almost every instance the decomposition product is brominated. Many opinions have been reported in the German and American chemical journals concerning the nature of the bromides which result. The author considered this an interesting field for investigation, since synthetic rubber, the final product in the process, is becoming an important commercial means for satisfying the ever increasing demand for rubber.
