Abstract
Milorganite is a by-product of the treatment of wastewater in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The method of production, in its most elementary form, begins with the introduction of a biomass of organisms into wastewater as it enters the sewage treatment plant. These organisms, in an oxygen rich environment, consume the organic impurities within the wastewater. The organisms grow in size and multiply. When the impurities are removed, the resulting bio-mass is separated from the clean water through settling techniques. Portions of this bio-mass can be introduced into untreated wastewater with the remainder becoming the raw material for the production of Milorganite.
