Abstract
The life of J. H. Newman, like the early Church Fathers whom he studied so diligently, was never concerned with theoretical discussions in a timeless vacuum. Whenever he spoke it was "to root up and to pull down, and to build and plant" (Jer. 1:9-10). His life was entirely devoted to the Church in contemporary England. Thus, when we go to him to seek that which is timeless in his work, we must carefully disengage that which was temporary. The Grammar was not abstracted from its period.
