Abstract
One of the greatest phenomena in world history is the expansion of the land loosely referred to as "Russia." That vast land mass was not always the monolithic empire which it is today; indeed, the name "Russia" was not officially applied to it until 1721. Originally, it was a loose collection of city-states whose rulers were kept busy protecting their own positions against the encroachments of the others or trying to undermine the authority of their rivals. Any semblance of unity which might. have been achieved under these circumstances was due to the temporary ascendancy of one city-state which used its power to establish its own hegemony.
