Abstract

There has long been a confused image of the school counselor. Indeed, it has often been difficult for the counselor himself to find a successful approach to his duties. Time is a monster. There is so much to be done, so much that is done, but so much that remains in high stacks on the counselor's desk.

Undoubtedly one of the greatest single problems that we face in our schools is underachievement. Much time is spent on a minority of students who attract our attention because of poor performance. Teachers tell us about them, administrators see them as discipline problems, parents are called in for conferences, and many counseling hours are spent in an effort to have them become more productive. These are the tough ones. These are the ones that make us examine our consciences and the wise use of our time.
