Abstract

In any prediction of the future we must, of necessity, look to the past. The most common practice for predicting success in higher education is to look to the past academic achievement of the student. A review of his high school record, hence, should be a good barometer for predicting his college success. In reviewing the high school records of many students, however, one finds that there are many who present dissimilar course schedules--only the basic courses in English, history, science and mathematics being in any way similar. For this reason, it is not sufficient merely to take the high school grade point average and consider that as a good representation of the students achievement. Rather the high school record should be broken down into specific key courses that may have a higher predictive value.

In this study the writer has attempted to break down all possible elements found in the records the high schools submit to the university , and check for the presence or absence of characteristic features that are found in the records of successful students that may be lacking or present in the records of unsuccessful students.
