Abstract

Management Science had its beginning during the Second world War in the Allied attempt to bring order to the distribution of goods and personnel on the Western front. The techniques developed during this period were originally used in inventory and production problems in business. Management Science came to the forefront in the mid-fifties when the Navy employed the Program Evaluation Review Technique in order to schedule the Polaris Missile project. In addition, at the same time Du Pont was using Critical Path Method, a technique similar to Program Evaluation Review Technique in the scheduling of plant and product development projects. About five years after the Navy and Du Pont projects, Advertising Age reported that Young and Rubicam and Asborn, Barton, Durstine and Asborn Incorporated had utilized a management science technique in selecting media units.
