Abstract

Provision of holistic care is the hallmark of the nursing profession. Nursing practices are "developed to meet the nee d s of individuals as integrated persons' ( American Nurses' Association, 1980, p. 18), rather than as fragmented entities. Upon admission to the hospital, a patient may be identified as having several nursing diagnoses, however, it is typically the single most apparent problem and it's ensuing diagnosis which guides the nursing plan of care. This lack of attention to the subtler diagnoses can result in a fragmented plan of care, and constitutes a movement away from holistic nursing .
