Abstract

This study was undertaken so that the primary teacher may recognize the value of the techniques and principles of play therapy and of normal play activity in guiding the child's emotional development. In analyzing the literature pertaining to play it was discovered that play is considered an important means for the child to express his emotional life. Play may be used as a method of diagnosis for the well or maladjusted child. Many emotionally disturbed or otherwise handicapped children have successfully received treatment through play therapy. Play therapy is that situation in which the child is left free to express himself rather fully with few adult restrictions. The value of this type of play therapy is the fact that, in being able to express himself completely, the child is able to adjust better to his own inner conflicts as well as the frustrations and tensions created by the world around him.
