Abstract
The adage, 'give a man a fish and his hunger today will be eased; teach a man to fish and he need never go hungry again,' symbolizes the expectations of the League of Nations Mandate. By educating the peoples of the former German colonies both intellectually and economically, the mandate powers were carrying out a sacred trust, that of preparing dependent people for a responsible role in the modern world. The various mandate powers went about their tasks differently, based on their own colonial experiences. Britain took on part of the former colony of Ger an East Africa. The name reverted to Tanganyika in the confusion of the war and was never discontinued until the emergence of independent Tanzania.
