Abstract

As the product, within the changing marketplace, is called upon to perform more complex functions with increasing reliability and lower cost, the techniques the engineer uses in designing this product must also keep pace. A powerful technique available to the engineer to keep up with product requirements is statistical tolerancing with the aid of a computer. With this technique, the designer can simulate and optimize a product design and then study its performance under dimensional . variations before building a single prototype. Beyond the development phase of the product, this technique can be applied to the production product with regards to identification of important dimensions which affect operational characteristics, discrepant part evaluation and estimation of production yield.
