Abstract
In the summer of 1966, Gardinai Ottaviani wrote a letter in which he stated that a Christological humanism is spreading which reduces Christ to a mere man who aquired only gradually an awareness of his divine sonship. The statement is no doubt true. Leslie Dewart, in the Future of Belief, points out that modern man, with his changed ideas about person and nature, finds it impossible to believe that in the one hypostasis of Jesus, two real natures are united. For man today, person is a center of consciousness which can objectify itself. A person is a being that can exist for-itself, that is, it must have a human consciousness which can make itself the object of experience and existence.
