Abstract
The accelerated pace of technological change poses a serious challenge to management. Attention is commonly focused on the problems involved in putting new innovations to work and on the imbalances created by these implementations. Perhaps even more far reaching in its impact on today's executive is the effect technology is having on the very processes of management itself. It is becoming increasingly obvious that the basic business concepts will have to be re-examined in terms of the new tools and techniques available to management. If decision making is considered a critical characteristic of the management job, then one aspect of recent technological advance can be identified, that is already leading to changes and may lead to more striking ones in the years ahead. The raw material of decision-making is information. A revolution is under way in information technology: the invention of new quantitative techniques and new applications of old ones. The computer is essential for applying some of these techniques.
