Abstract

In connection with studies of the setting mechanism and microstructure of dental amalgam, carried out under grants from the National Institute For Dental Research, U.S. Public Health Service, the need arose for mercury analysis of amalgam specimens produced from experimental and commercial alloys under various methods of manipulation. Since existing methods for mercury analysis of dental amalgam are both laborious and time consuming, and cause destruction of the samples used it was decided to study the feasibility of adapting the principle of fluorescent x-ray spectroscopy for such analysis, and this thesis describes the results of these studies.
