Abstract
The Territory of Illinois advanced to statehood during the years 1809- 1818. Generally Illinois followed the steps to statehood as outlined in the Ordinance of 1787: formation of a separate territory with its own government, petition for statehood upon reaching a population of 60,000, writing of a state constitution, followed by admission to the Union by the Congress of the United States. A combination of local and national circumstances facilitated and stimulated this process.
