Abstract
What can I, as a teacher of first- grade children, do to help my first graders in the all- important role of learning to read? Children come to first grad with varying backgrounds , experiences, maturity-- I must provide for each child individually. Guiding every young child to that stage in his educational program when he is ready for formal reading instruction is one of the most important jobs of a primary teacher. In this paper, I plan to deal with readiness , or getting the children ready to read. Factors which determine readiness will be discussed. These factors are: physical qualifications, visual development, auditory development, oral speech patterns, social and emotional adjustment, mental development, interests and attitudes backgrounds, and language development.
