Abstract
In looking for a topic on which to write, one of my primary concerns was finding a subject which would be useful to me in my teaching. Our textbook does not cover the idea of limits of sequences, limits of functions or continuity to any extent. It does mention the existence of such ideas, but there is no depth to the discussion. We do, however, use the idea of these concepts in formulating our discussion of the first derivative and showing the existence of it. Also, the limit idea is of great importance in our basic discussion of the limit of the slope of the tangent at the point. The shortcoming of the textbook led to the writing of this paper. I do not intend to cover the ideas to great depth. The students will get this in their later mathematics studies. My intention here is to simply give them the background which is necessary and sufficient to be able to understand more fully the material covered in our course. I have used this material in the classroom this past year, and I found that the comprehension and retention of the later material was greater than the previous years, even though I did not feel that the ability of the classes on a whole was as great as that of their predecessors.
