Abstract

During the past four years the priestly ministry of the writer has been focused upon young people. It is from this ministry, in the classroom and on high school retreats, that this paper has evolved. It has been the experience of the writer that many young people have a difficult time accepting and making use of an area of church life which could be very beneficial for them especially during their teenage years -- the Sacrament of Penance. This research on the Sacrament of Reconciliation is directed toward indicating the value that the sacrament can have in helping the adolescent in his growth as a Christian person.

One of the reasons that the adolescent finds it difficult to find meaning in the sacrament stems from the educational approach with which he was introduced to it in his early years. Most young people have come away with the impression that Confession is simply something that has to be done -- a ritual to be performed. They have learned the mechanics of going about it, but somehow the meaning of this celebration of reconciliation and its significance for their growth has escaped them.
