Abstract
In Coriolanus Shakespeare delineates the Renaissance conceptions of social theory and then shows them violated. By the juxtaposition of Coriolanus, the superior individual, with the mob of plebians, Shakespeare causes the tensions of the play to stand forth in sharp prominence. The mean of behavior between these two antithetical forces is voiced by Menenius, a patrician, whose speeches are an embodiment of sixteenth century social theory.
