Abstract
English prosodical theories generally stem from an accentual syllabic metrical tradition originating during the Middle Ages. Some 'twentieth century poets, such as William Carlos Williams., by their own claims have rejected the accentual-syllabic tradition. The methods for seaming accentual-syllabic poetry cannot be used to describe Williams' metrics. Factors other than stressed and non-stressed syllables must be considered if the rhythm of his poetry is to be described.
