Abstract

Four centuries ago, an Augustinian priest of the Church in Germany spearheaded a movement, known as the Protestant Reformation, which was to preoccupy the Church for succeeding centuries. But for the Reformation era, the Church most probably would have continued to study herself in a progression of self-discoveries. Instead, for almost three hundred years her energies were diverted to a defense of her position. The necessity of maintaining her defensive position precluded any significant growth in her self-understanding relevant to her historical situation. Within our own century this defensive element has somewhat tapered off, at least in certain areas. Pius XI and Pius XII initiated and prompted Biblical research which opened hitherto unexplored facets of theological thought. John XXIII unleased the potential energy to phenomenal possibilities of growth in his total openness to the Spirit.
