Abstract
Conic sections is a topic that appears often and in seemingly widely different contexts in the mathematics curriculum. This attention given to conic sections seems justified if its importance can be measured in relation to its historical development and the variety of its applications. The history of mathematics lends itself to giving the insight many students need to appreciate mathematical thought. Studying mathematics in its historic setting cultivates an appreciation of the part mathematics plays in cultures.
