Abstract

Kripke and Bever (’56) suggested that the thyroid hormones act in increasing tissue metabolism on succinic dehydrogenase by protecting the sulphydryl groups, essential for enzymatic activity, from oxidation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of thyroxine on succinic dehydrogenase activity and deter¬ mine if this enzyme was the factor in the control cellular respiration rate. A modified tetrazolium technique of Shelton('57) was employed in which the assay of the enzyme could be expressed on a quantitative basis by using tissue homogenates.
