Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to arrive at an interpretation of Arthur Kopit' s Chamber Music through the staged production of the play and attendant research. The style of the play and its theatrical precedents are discussed in Chapter 1. A comparative studly of the author's complete works comprises Chapter 2. The author of this thesis designed and directed a production of Chamber Music which was presented for an audience at Marquette University in December 1980. A study of the specific nature of this production is recorded in the Director's Manual and Prompt Book (Chapter 3). Finally, based on the research, but most importantly on the experience of the staged production, an interpretation is concluded.
