Abstract
There has been a need for a routine hearing testing program in the elementary schools in the city of Milwaukee. As such a program was conducted by Dr. Max E. Wiese of the Milwaukee Health Department in the third grades of Milwaukee Public Schools, the writer carried on the equivalent in the Parochial Schools. This paper gives a summary of the testing program, the statistics on hearing losses among the third grade students as determined by the testing program, and the effect of the hearing losses on the scholastic and personality development of the hearing defective children. This is the first city-wide hearing survey of a specific grade ever conducted in parochial schools. Several individual schools had whisper tests and other similar hearing tests, but very few had audiometric tests given to their students. A survey to find all hearing defective children has never been conducted in the eighty-four schools included in this survey.
